Feel like a proverb or an adage? Be careful what you wish for!

In planning for this post, I started thinking of proverbs and adages. Are they different? According to Wikipedia, they are the same. They are similar, in that both are sayings that impart wisdom of one sort or another, but there is a difference. While proverbs find their roots in tradition and culture, adages are more varied in both their origins and their applications.

Ten of the most common proverbs, which are common to numerous languages, are:

  1. “Actions speak louder than words.”
  2. “A penny saved is a penny earned.”
  3. “The early bird catches the worm.”
  4. “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.”
  5. “Honesty is the best policy.”
  6. “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”
  7. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
  8. “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”
  9. “You can’t judge a book by its cover.”
  10. “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

And for adages:

  1. “Look before you leap.”
  2. “Better safe than sorry.”
  3. “Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”
  4. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
  5. “A rolling stone gathers no moss.”
  6. “All good things must come to an end.”
  7. “A stitch in time saves nine.”
  8. “All’s fair in love and war.”
  9. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
  10. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

I was a big fan of Yogi Berra, especially his malapropisms.

To bring this post to a humorous close, I present, in no particular order, ten of his most famous:

  1. “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
  2. “It’s déjà vu all over again.”
  3. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
  4. “Nobody goes there anymore; it’s too crowded.”
  5. “You can observe a lot by watching.”
  6. “Baseball is 90 percent mental. The other half is physical.”
  7. “It’s like déjà vu all over again.”
  8. “The future ain’t what it used to be.”
  9. “We made too many wrong mistakes.”
  10. “You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there.”

Yes, I have repeated one, but as it’s not a perfect copy, I ask your forgiveness.  And in memory of a great man who probably didn’t realize how funny he was, I hope I threw a little sunshine your way, even if it was just a drop in the bucket.
