Spring-The best season of the year

Spring-The best season of the year

“Spring is sprung, the grass is riz. I wonder where the flowers is?”

That silly children’s rhyme is running through my head, as it always does this time of year. With the season’s official arrival last night, I wanted to extol its virtues.

Spring is my favorite season, followed by autumn and summer. Winter? That accursed time of year follows a distant fourth.

Although I love the warmer weather and freedom that temperatures above freezing bring, what I look forward to is the first blades of grass appearing, which quickly turn the fields surrounding my walking paths green. The sight of petals forming into colorful blossoms stirs my soul, but for me, the trees budding with new leaves says the season has arrived.

My favorite walking path runs along the river, ending in a portion that looks a lot like the image above. Believe it or not, the path leads under a busy bridge which has one of the city’s largest fire stations beside it! Despite the constant noise of cars and trucks and the associated hubbub, this part of the trail is an oasis of calm in a sea of turbulence.

No matter what kind of mood I am in, the serenity I find here calms me and restores my good spirits. And the dog loves running though the bushes to chase rabbits. She never catches any, which is fine by me. I want her to get some exercise, but not at the peril of other creatures.

One of the best things about this time of year is that the temperatures are warm enough for me to take my computer out on the deck to do my writing. I love doing that and it seems to fuel my creative juices. Summer here can be too warm for that, especially when it hangs around 98 degrees (37 celsius) for weeks on end.

The forecast calls for three or four days of snow this week, so I guess I’ll have to wait a bit, unless I want to bundle up like Nanook of the North, which kind of defeats the purpose. I can’t complain, though. This area is so dry we need all the moisture we can get. Let’s hope the forecast is accurate. At this point, I’d even welcome warm spring rain.
